Phew! Tried very hard to find something other to draw than people at coffeehouses, but after ending up with my own left hand on wednesdays sketch I was back drinking coffee yesterday. I must take a look around the house and see if I can’t find some objects worth spending time on. Some kitchen utensils perhaps. And next week I’m considering throwing in some colors too. Not making any promises but I will try …

Made two drawings on my way to work today. A good excuse to stop for a nice cup of coffee. Must buy a new sketchbook later today, as the old one only has one page left. As it happens I love to buy art supplies, so I’m not complaining.

DART passengers

Today I took the train to Howth, walked around on some cliffs in the rain, ate a crab sandwich, and took the train back. These people were on the train coming back.

I had a 2.5-hour layover in Brussels this morning, on my way to Dublin, so I did some drawings from a seat in the middle of the shopping area.

Some signs were reflected on the shiny floor:

I have decided that Brussels is an excellent country city, by the way, because everything is in both French and Dutch: two languages I can’t speak at all but love to listen to.

I didn’t draw yesterday, because I never left the house, so today you get two.

Here, Natalia takes a rest on the sofa from last week.

As soon as I decided to draw this couple, they decided to spend most of the rest of the evening sitting down. So I had to make up quite a bit of it. Probably not the parts you think.

I don’t know the woman’s name, because I’ve never danced with her. The man is named Felix, "as in the cat."

I spent part of last week traveling, and discovered that an airline seat is actually a good place for drawing. A few impressions, in no particular order.

What I could see on the flight out.

A traveling companion. I meant to sketch him in different settings during my trip, but failed.

A very chatty, very loud, very tall woman spent much of my flight talking to someone in first class. She actually did exist in three dimensions, despite what this drawing might suggest.

Made this one on my way to work today. This girl was sitting inside with a huge jacket on. She must have been really, really cold.

case in point

Yesterday, when I posted that drawing of various strangers’ feet, Jerry Waese commented at Flickr, “next time do ears.” I replied that

The problem with ears is that they’re attached to people’s heads. I’d have to look at a bunch of strangers’ heads, and they’d think I was staring at them (which I would be), and they’d get freaked out / annoyed / hostile. . . .

Everybody wants to be anonymous on the subway.

Today, because of poor planning, I was stuck drawing feet again; and the train was pretty crowded, so I was drawing the woman directly in front of me. She didn’t notice for a while, because she was reading. But eventually she did, at a point when I was staring very intently at her shoes, and she began to fidget. Finally, at a stop where the train emptied out a bit, she got up and walked down the car. Not to get off, just to change seats.

I was not dressed like a scary person. I was wearing a black and white flowered dress, red clogs, black leather jacket, pink scarf, iPod. Doesn’t matter. People don’t like being drawn around here.

People on the train were not cooperating this evening. They all kept moving their feet.

My car was on the fritz today, so I had to take the bus downtown, which provided me the opportunity to draw this kid wearing a hoodie over across from me.  He was reading some papers. I sketched him in charcoal pencil on the bus and then added color via Photoshop when I got home. The drawing was a little shakey on the bus. Oh well.
