Blanket

Part of a baby blanket I’m making for my brother’s forthcoming boy.

I started knitting this on Tuesday and then remembered that "Blanket" is the current theme for Illustration Friday, and I thought, "Hey! I should draw it!" Originally I imagined doing a super-macro drawing of just a couple of stitches, but I started too small, and grew crosseyed and bored very quickly, so I gave up and went for evocative abstraction.

So here’s the piece for Illustration Friday on the theme “scale.”  I thought it would be easier to use  actual printed music  but drawing the figures at this tiny scale was difficult.  I used the Muybridge photos of a guy walking up steps plus another photo of a guy playing the trumpet.

sofa

One of the sofas at the bar where my friend Natalia and I go to tango on Monday nights. Or, rather, she tangos. Tonight I, obviously, was quite stationary. Both my feet were hopelessly lefted this evening, and after two dances each with three kind partners, I was benched. Rats.

Fortunately, there was this very bumpy couch on the far side of the dance floor, which kept me busy for a good half hour. So many bumps! I got pretty tired of them after, like, the tenth one. Also, people kept sitting on the couch—my couch—while I was drawing. They did this just to annoy me, I am convinced.

Oh! But wait! While I was drawing, a guy came up and watched over my shoulder for a few minutes. When I looked up he asked, “What are you doing?”

“I’m drawing the sofa.” Like, duh—I was about three-quarters done at that point. He couldn’t recognize the sofa I was staring at?

“Oh. From where I was back there, I thought those were scales.”

So, there you have it: My Illustration Friday drawing for this week’s theme, which is “scale.” So the evening wasn’t a total bust.

Winter White Hat November 2, 2007

02 winter white hat

So, because today’s Illustration Friday theme is “Hats,” on the subway this morning I looked for a person wearing one. Not difficult—half the men in New York wear baseball caps. But this guy, though layered very thoroughly in turtleneck, sweater, and puff coat, was wearing a brilliant white piqué cap. So summery! Or, if you prefer, winter white.

And, of course, he had on sunglasses, although he was underground and reading a newspaper.

I didn’t have a good seat today, and he kept moving his head from one side to the other as he turned the pages of his newspaper (another reason to fold up your newspaper as you read, people!), which is why his hat obeys no known conventions of two-dimensional representation. At least, that is my story, and I am sticking to it.
