The Wilderness Must Be Explored! November 3, 2009

For Day 1 of DrawMo I managed a little cartoon sketch of an amazingly funny guy I’m a fan of named Jon Stewart. For Day 2 I drew another Jon—but this one has amazing taste in Halloween costumes.

I found today’s Jon via Lee Unkrich’s (@leeunkrich: Pixar director) twitter feed when he started linking to Pixar-inspired Halloween costumes. They were all really cute, but Jon’s was my favorite. His folks did a great job with the costume [check out the all their Up costume photos at their blog: Chez PLJ! And marvel at all of Jon’s other great costumes too!] and he really wears it well.

I’m going to try to finish this sketch tomorrow as well as start an all new sketch for Day 3; I had a lot of fun working on Jon’s smile tonight.

A Wilderness Explorer is a friend to all.

Day 1: Interrobang

I promise I won’t draw the cats every day this month—for one thing, it doesn’t look like they’ll stand for it—but you may see them quite a lot. What can I say? They’re captive models.

This is a sort of palimpsest, an older work with text upon which I have added new text (the Spanish text), dark lines in marker, a couple of stray blue acrylic marks, and a thickish white acrylic wash.

My art class had our holiday party last night and my favorite model posed. She had brought a Santa hat, but people objected because they like her tiny little dreadlocks.

circus people

I saw a black and white photo of some circus people on Flickr and decided to convert it to a sort of overly bright, bold disjointed acrylic painting. The proportions are a little screwy but they’re supposed to be. Its reminded me a little of Paris in the 20’s.

I’m not even going to prendend I did these sketches one day at a time. Hehe. Went to a really inspiring lecture yesterday about Magazine Design, and listen to Art Directors from Real Simple, GQ, Esquire, Wired and W talk, and while they talked I drew them.

This is Niels Bøje Ziegler from Denmark who put together the program of the day, and Eva Spring from Real Simple.

And this is Anton Loukhnovets from Gentlemen’s Quarterly, who drank an enourmous amount of water (from a Vodka bottle) during his speach. I don’t know how he managed to get it all down. Must have been close to a liter in less than one hour. Impressive. (And so was his work.)

Here we have Scott Dadich from Wired. His speach was one of the best of the day I think. Made me want to go out and buy Wired.

This is David Cucurito from Esquire. I admit I probably added a few pounds to his actual weight.

He was the most energetic speaker yesterday, and moved around a lot.

And this is Nathalie Kirsheh from W. She was not moving at all.

I had dinner at my mom’s house yesterday with my brother, my sister-in-law, and their baby, as well as Wendy, who lived upstairs from us and babysat for me when I was a wee tot. She was very into the baby and could not fathom why I am not interested in holding it.
